Porphyry Celt

Clark County, Indiana Full Groove Axe

Size: 4 3/4" long

Provenance: Clark County, Indiana. X: Copeland

Condition: Super. Nicely formed full groove axe. Not entirely sure of material. It is a hardstone, and has white almost porphoretic(spelling?) inclusions. They may be white quartz. I am not a geologist.

Flint Chisel

Size: 5" long

Provenance: Summit County, Ohio. X: Copeland

Condition: Excellent. This piece is either made from Kanawha flint from West Virginia or Breathitt Chert from Northern Kentucky. Both were used for this rare and desirable tool. Super polish on the bit.

Price: $200

3/4 Grooved Ball Shaped Headknocker

Size: 2 1/4" long x 2 1/4" wide

Provenance: Montgomery County, Ohio.

Condition: Good. I can imagine this tool being used on an old "buggy whip" to deliver the kill shot. I have seen a prehistoric bear skull with a hole in it just about the same size as this object. Perfectly balanced and deadly. This type of object became commonplace during the Historic period, but are rarely seen in the prehistoric tool kit.

Price: $50

3/4 Grooved Flat End Head Knocker

Size: 3 3/16" long x 2 1/4" wide

Provenance: Montgomery County, Ohio

Condition: Good. This piece appears to be the multi-use hammering object of its day. A small dimple on the bottom of one end suggests further use as a pestle. It is larger and heavier than the ball end version.

Price: $50

Doc Meuser Full Groove Axe

Size: 6 7/8" long x 4 1/2" wide

Provenance: Doc Meuser. No number on piece, but it has plenty of writing on it. Writing says "Found in London Madison Co. O March 25, 1929" Last sold at Hugh Huff auction in the 1980's

Condition: Super. Only full groove I ever collected. Piece has excellent everything for a great full groove: size, form, polish, condition, material..... I highlighted a spot on another picture that may be restoration. I'm not totally sure, but never wanted to try to remove it. Consider it damage, and a very small bit of it. Email me for more details on this area.

Price: $1000

Close-up of "restoration"

If it is damage/restoration, the area is smaller than a dime, and a surface chip that doesn't wrap around the bit.

Doc Meuser "holed" adz

Provenance: Richland County, Ohio. X: Doctor Gordon Meuser #105/2. Purchased at Meuser auction by Ben Woodworth. Featured on Page 79, Central States Journal Vol. 47 #2.

Add on top of that a hole that may have turned it into a pendant, and you have a rare Ohio stone artifact from the greatest collection ever assembled. The Meuser writing and numbers are on the piece.

Galena Loafstone

Size: 2 1/4" long x 1" wide x 1" tall.

Provenance: Woodford County, Kentucky. X: Sam Cox.

Condition: Excellent. These loafstones were used as atl-atl weights, and Galena(lead ore) was a favorite material b/c of its weight. This piece is extremely heavy for its size. Not easy to find a good atl-atl weight for less than $150. When I first started buying these pieces, they were not appreciated for their importance to the prehistoric man tool kit. Now, they are picked up whenever they become available.

Price: $125
