Early Archaic Short Base Corner Notch |
Size: 2 1/2" long
Provenance: Miami County, Ohio. X: Grove Merrit
Condition: Perfect. If it sounds like I made up the point type above, I did. I am not sure how to classify the piece. It is surely Early Archaic, and wrapped up in the bifurcate, kirk, and pinetree traditions. Extremely thin, super patinated material, and killer workmanship.

Pair of Hafted Shaft Scrapers |
Size: 2 1/4" long each
Provenance: Found by the same person in Coshocton County, Ohio. X: D. Link.
Condition: Super. This well documented Ohio oddball tool is extremely rare. I wouldn't be suprised if more than a few people viewing this entry haven't seen one before. I have read numerous articles on theories of how/why they were created. I stick with the "Swiss Army Knife" theory for the Archaic tool kit.
Price: $175 each. |

Indiana E-Notch Thebes |
Size: 2 13/16" long x 1 1/2" wide
Provenance: Indiana. Estate purchase where collection ended up in Arizona. Several pieces in collection were labeled as found in early 1900's.
Condition: Excellent. One of the true trophy types for arrowhead collectors. These E-Notches are few and far between. This one is steeply beveled and made from local material. Has anyone ever noticed how a large number of authentic Thebes types are made from local flint sources?

Flint Ridge Blade. |
Size: 3 1/2" long x 1 1/2" wide
Provenance: Lorain County, Ohio. Marked on one side with a very old India ink mark of "6".
Condition: Super. I have seen very few examples of this color scheme in Flint Ridge. I think it is a rare olive green colored chalcedony. It does have the "cloudy" spots like other chalcedony, but not the pale blue/pink colors. This may be part of a larger cache. Good in just about any color frame. It is translucent.

2 Blade Cache - Stark County |
Size: Complete blade is 3" long.
Provenance: Stark County, Ohio. Purchased from an old Northern Ohio collection.
Condition: Super. I believe both pieces are made from the same piece of high quality translucent Flint Ridge. The broken example adds to the find by documenting they came from a cache and were made from same piece of flint.

Michigan Bullseye Hornstone Adena |
Size: 3 11/16" long x 2" wide
Provenance: Came from an the estate of Lorenzo Badge Entrican, MI.
Condition: Excellent. I have not figured out why so much Hornstone material ends up in Michigan, but it does. Is there another source? Is it a close relative of Hornstone? Was there a well travelled trade route? This is a very nice Adena with good size.

Knobbed Hardin of Sonora |
Size: 3 ¼” long
Provenance: Southern Indiana. X: Mike Thursby. Holds his tag #168. I guess I bought this 7-8 years ago from Mike.
Condition: Excellent. Sonora Flint in Green patination. Camera failed the colors, but it is dark blue sonora with a greenish cast over it. Knobbed Hardins with color are extremely desirable. A few nicks up the blade edge that show the stones inside color.

Giant Sized "3 Bevel" knife |
Size: 5 3/8” long x 2 1/8” wide.
Provenance: I do not have the find location on this piece. There is a small piece of medical tape on the back with an “H” on it. From what I know, this appears to be Dr. Hugh T. Young’s sticker. Dr. Young is one of our most famous collectors and put together one of the greatest artifact collections of all time.
Condition: Good. A couple of small nicks from being a classic. The little square shaped ding is not part of a break on the piece. There are some natural fault lines in the flint, but it is 100% not broken/glued. I guess this piece falls into the early archaic sequence of knives. The material is the extremely desirable Cobden Flint from Southern Illinois. With the limited distribution of this material, So. Il. is a very probable find location. This knife has a feature I have never seen before. There is alternate beveling on the same side. The other side bevels run only on one side. I guess we could call it a “three bevel”.

Huge Carter Cave Big Sandy |
Size: 4 1/4" long x 1 3/8" wide
Provenance: Fayette County, Ohio. I purchased piece from Doug Hooks of Mansfield, Ohio who informed me that this fine artifact was in his father's collection. Jack Hooks is one of the top names in Ohio collecting history.
Condition: Excellent. A few dings here and there, but overall in great shape especially for its size. The one nick on the tip amazes me that it didn't break the piece. Super material that stands out in any frame. This piece is also an excellent study in authenticity. Absolutely loaded with proper mineralization.

Carter Cave Jacks Reef |
Size: 2 1/8" long.
Provenance: Boyle County, Kentucky
Condition: Excellent. One chip near the tip, but the tip was rounded off prehistorically with the classic pentagonal resharpening pattern of the Jacks Reef culture. This rare type is even rarer in Carter Cave. I have had this point for a long time and really only removed it from its home, b/c it is so thin that it slid around in a travelling frame. A little tissue paper behind it will eliminate the problem for the buyer.
